Understanding Ingredients
In Member Kitchens, ingredients can be categorized into two main types: app default ingredients and custom ingredients.
App Default Ingredients
These are pre-populated ingredients available across all apps. They can be customized by you to better fit your brand and content.
Shared: These ingredients are available to all apps.
Customizable: You can override their names and properties to suit your needs.
Custom Ingredients
These ingredients are specific to your app and can be created by you or other admins.
Unique: Only visible within your app.
Creation: You can add new ingredients that are not available in the app defaults.
Managing Ingredient Overrides
You have the ability to customize app default ingredients to better align with your content. Here’s how to manage these overrides:
Creating and Editing Overrides
Navigate to the ingredient detail page by selecting an ingredient from the list.
Modify the fields such as Name, Nutrition Data, and Aisle as needed.
Changes are saved automatically after a brief period of inactivity.
Reverting Overrides
If you want to revert any changes made to an ingredient:
To revert a single field, simply change the value back to the original.
To reset all changes, click the Reset to Default button.
Ingredient Library Management
The ingredient library is where you manage all your ingredients. Here are some key features:
Renaming Ingredients
You can rename ingredients to better fit your content style. Use the following fields:
Full Singular Name: The complete name of the ingredient (e.g., "red apple").
Short Singular Name: A concise version of the ingredient name (e.g., "apple").
Setting Preferred Units
When adding or editing an ingredient, you can specify the measurement unit:
Unit: Choose from a list of predefined units (e.g., cup, tablespoon).
Unit Qualifier: Add additional context (e.g., "heaping", "packed").
Adding Preparation Notes
You can include preparation notes for each ingredient to provide clarity on how they should be used (e.g., "chopped", "diced").
Ingredient Display Format
When ingredients are displayed in recipes, they follow a consistent format:
[amount or range] [unitQualifier] [unit] [ingredient name] ([notes])
For example:
2 cups Flour (sifted)1-2 tablespoons Olive Oil (extra virgin)
This format ensures that your members receive clear and actionable information when using your recipes.
Best Practices for Managing Ingredients
Use App Defaults: Whenever possible, use app default ingredients to maintain consistency.
Customize with Overrides: Tailor app default ingredients to fit your brand through overrides.
