Using Sub-Recipes (Component Recipes)

Updated yesterday

Why: Enhance your recipes by including other recipes as components, like a dressing in a salad. This modular approach simplifies your content and ensures accurate nutrition and shopping lists for your members.

Navigate: App Station > Content Library > Recipes > [Recipe] > Components tab

Quick Start

  1. Navigate to the Content Library in App Station.

  2. Select a recipe and go to the Components tab.

  3. Click Add Component Recipe and search for the desired recipe.

  4. Click Edit on the component to set the quantity and unit (e.g., "2 tbsp").

  5. Save your changes.

Overview of Component Recipes

Component recipes allow you to include other recipes as ingredients in your main recipes. For instance, a salad recipe can reference a dressing recipe, specifying how much dressing to use. This feature supports:

  • Partial amounts: Specify quantities like "2 tbsp of Honey Mustard Dressing."

  • Yield-based scaling: Define total yield for accurate portioning.

  • Nutrition calculation: Automatically includes scaled nutrition from components.

  • Shopping list integration: Properly scales component ingredients in shopping lists.

Setting Up Component Recipes

Yield Configuration

To use a recipe as a component, you need to set its yield:

  1. Navigate to the recipe's Details tab.

  2. Find the Recipe Yield section.

  3. Enter the total yield amount (e.g., 1).

  4. Enter the yield unit (e.g., "cup").

Example: For a dressing recipe that makes 1 cup, set:

  • Recipe Yield: 1

  • Yield Unit: cup

Adding Components with Quantities

  1. Go to the recipe's Ingredients tab.

  2. In the Component Recipes section, search and add the desired component.

  3. Click Edit on the component to set the quantity.

  4. Enter the amount and unit (e.g., "2 tbsp").

  5. Save your changes.

Unit Compatibility

The system checks that the units you use for components are compatible with the recipe yield. Here are the basic rules:

  • Volume units (e.g., cup, tbsp) can be used with other volume units.

  • Weight units (e.g., g, oz) can be used with other weight units.

  • Count units (e.g., piece, serving) can be used with other count units.

If the units don't match, the system will alert you.

Nutrition and Shopping List Integration

Nutrition Calculation

When you include a component recipe, its nutrition is automatically calculated and added to the parent recipe. Here's how it works:

  1. Calculate the ratio of the component used based on the amount and yield.

  2. Retrieve the nutrition data from the component recipe.

  3. Multiply the nutrition by the ratio to get the portion used.

  4. Add this to the parent recipe's nutrition.

Shopping List Integration

When generating shopping lists, the system:

  1. Fetches component recipes for each main recipe.

  2. Calculates the component ratio based on the amount and yield.

  3. Scales the component ingredients accordingly and aggregates them into the shopping list.

Note: Components are processed only one level deep.

Best Practices

  • Always set a yield for recipes intended to be used as components.

  • Use matching unit types between component amounts and recipe yields.

  • Test your recipes with nutrition data to ensure proper scaling.

  • Document yield in recipe notes for clarity.
