How Content Access Works

Updated yesterday

Why: Understanding how content access works helps you manage what your members can see, ensuring they receive the right content based on their subscriptions and access levels.

Navigate: App Station > App Settings > Access Levels

Quick Start

  1. Open App Station and go to App Settings.

  2. Click on Access Levels.

  3. Review the showLockedContent settings for each access level.

  4. Set content visibility to Public, Members, or Assigned as needed.

  5. Save your changes.

Understanding Content Access

Content visibility in your app is controlled by access levels, which determine what your members can see. Here’s how it works:

Content Visibility Modes

  1. Public: Open to everyone, including guests.

  2. Members: Requires specific access levels. Members without the required access will see locked content.

  3. Assigned: Only users with a direct content grant can view this content. It is completely hidden from everyone else.

Access Control Gates

When a member tries to access content, the system checks their permissions in the following order:

  1. Is the user an admin? (Full access)

  2. Does the user have a direct content grant? (Full access)

  3. Is the content public? (Full access)

  4. Does the user have the required access level? (Full access)

  5. If none match, the content is either locked or hidden based on settings.

Locked Content and Teasers

When members encounter locked content, they may see a teaser instead of the full content. This teaser typically includes:

  • A partial preview of the content.

  • A call-to-action for guests to sign up or log in.

  • Upgrade options for members who need a higher access level.

This feature encourages engagement and helps convert guests into paying members.

Managing Access Levels

You can configure how locked content is displayed by adjusting the showLockedContent setting for each access level:

  • True (default): Shows locked content with an upgrade prompt.

  • False: Hides the content completely.

If a member has multiple access levels, the most permissive setting applies. For example, if any of their access levels allow for locked content to be shown, they will see it as locked.

Direct Content Grants

As an admin, you can manually grant specific content to specific users. This bypasses access level requirements entirely, ensuring that those users can access the content regardless of their access levels.

Content Teaser System

The content teaser system enhances user experience by showing a preview of locked content. Here’s how it works:

  1. When a guest or member without access tries to view content, they see a teaser instead of the full content.

  2. The teaser includes visible blocks from the content template and prompts for login or upgrade.

  3. After logging in or upgrading, users are redirected back to the original content.

Configuring Teasers

You can customize how teasers appear by adjusting settings in the Detail Templates section of App Station. Here, you can choose which blocks to show in the teaser view and whether to blur hidden blocks.
